The £20million striker arrived on Tyneside earlier this week from AFC Bournemouth and goes straight into the side against the Hammers, who he has a good goalscoring record against.

Andy Carroll has also been named in the starting line-up, with full debuts for Jeff Hendrick and Jamal Lewis with Ryan Fraser on the bench.

Fans have been quick to query whether it is a 4-4-2 system or if one of the forwards would play out wide.

Here’s the best of the NUFC fan reaction from social media and you can follow all the action via our live blog here:

Harry Roy tweeted: “It is to note that Wilson played in a two up front at Bournemouth with Josh King alongside him. Assume this shift to 4-4-2 is purely to suit him. #NUFC”

Daniel added: “Get a good hour out of Carroll and bring the speed merchants on.”

“Hopefully get some of Fraser late on too. #NUFC”

UFC_Ez Ez tweeted: “Happy to eat my words, but that's a baffling 1990s team selection.”

harbourmaster added: “Safe to say that's not the starting line-up pretty much anyone was expecting... #nufc”

rpw added: “Wilson and Andy Carroll up front. Now that is Juicy! #NUFC”
