The Dutchman had been earmarked for talks over a new deal for some time and his future was made one of the first priorities of new sporting director Ross Wilson when he joined the club from Nottingham Forest back in October. Botman had entered the final 18-months of his deal at St James’ Park, giving way to rising fears that he could be on his way out of the club if no new deal was agreed.

Botman joined Newcastle United from French side Lille back in July 2022 during the first summer transfer window under new ownership. Botman joined the likes of Alexander Isak, Matt Targett and Nick Pope in moving to Tyneside for their first full season under Eddie Howe.

Botman would instantly become an integral part of Howe’s back line as he, alongside Fabian Schar, Dan Burn and Kieran Trippier, compromised the Premier League’s joint-meanest defence. Newcastle United conceded just 33 goals in 38 league games that season - a tally matched only by eventual champions Manchester City.

That back four, supported once again by Pope in goal, also began the next campaign. However, injury issues would soon bite and the Magpies have never since been able to restore that level of defensive dominance. Botman’s 2023/24 campaign would be injury free for just a matter of matches before a knee injury sidelined him between the end of September and mid-December.

He would make his return to the starting XI, but saw his season prematurely curtailed in March when it was revealed that he would require surgery on that knee injury. Botman wouldn’t feature again in 2023 and would play just five matches in total in the space of 12 months - all of those came in the first two months of 2024.

Whilst injury issues have persisted this season, Botman’s return to fitness couldn’t have come at a better time for Eddie Howe as he has to deal with yet another defensive injury crisis. It is hoped that the Dutchman can put those injury issues behind him and re-establish himself as a dominant centre-back and someone that the Magpies can build their team around.

Sven Botman signs new Newcastle United contract

Speaking to the club’s website about his new deal, Botman said: “I’m really happy to sign this contract. This club has given me so much in the last three-and-a-half years.

“I’ve grown as a person and as a player here and I feel like I have so much more to give in the long term. That’s why both parties are really happy with this decision and I’m looking forward to what’s coming in the future here.”

Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe added: “We’re delighted that Sven has committed his long-term future to the club. He has been an outstanding player for us since he joined and I firmly believe there’s more to come from him.

“Sven has a strong mentality and work ethic, which is clear every time he trains or plays. We value his presence on and off the pitch and l’m really pleased to see his long-term future secured here.”

Newcastle United Sporting Director Ross Wilson said: “Sven is not only an important player on the pitch, but also a top professional and a hugely respected member of our squad.

“With Sven’s previous contract due to expire at the end of next season, it’s fantastic that we’ve secured his future here. I know Eddie and the players are equally thrilled.

“Sven feels settled in Newcastle, both in the city and within our squad, and we’re all excited to continue with him in our ranks.”
