Money is understood to be tight following the £20million+ arrival of Joe Willock but Bruce remains keen to strengthen his squad.
Bruce said: “We’ll see if there is anyone who can make us better. If there is, then we’ll try.”
That said, there is still time for players to leave Tyneside too.

5. MATTY LONGSTAFF - LOAN
Newcastle are open to allowing Longstaff to leave on loan but want him to sign a contract extension first. Will Longstaff do that? It’s difficult to envisage why he'd want to commit to another year having been consistently overlooked by Bruce. Photo: Charlotte Tattersall

6. FREDDIE WOODMAN - SALE/ LOAN
Now is Woodman’s chance to shine and stake his claim for the number one jersey, or, at the very least, rival Martin Dubravka. However, once the Slovakian and Karl Darlow return, where does that leave the 24-year-old? He’s too good and ambitious to be a number three. Photo: George Wood

7. MARK GILLESPIE - LOAN
Assume Woodman stays put, him, Dubravka and Darlow are all ahead of Gillespie. Indeed, that’s no benefit to Gillespie as the club would likely leave him out of the 25-man Premier League squad. A short-term loan, at least, could work for both parties. Photo: Pool

8. DAN LANGLEY - LOAN
Now would be a good time for the 6ft 7in goalkeeper to go out and experience regular senior football, rather than return to the under-23s after playing in first-team pre-season friendlies at York City and Doncaster Rovers. Photo: Charlotte Tattersall
