'The next Sadio Mane' - This is why Newcastle United boss is delighted to sign Valentino Lazaro on loan from Inter Milan
Here’s everything you need to know about the wideman:
Position: Right Winger
Career history: Red Bull Salzburg, Hertha BSC, Inter Milan
What has his career been like?
Lazaro began his career in his native Austria with Red Bull Salzburg, bursting onto the scene in 2012 with some dynamic displays while still a teenager.
He went on to make 85 appearances for Salzburg, with his dynamic attacking style helping draw comparisons with Liverpool star Sadio Mane – who also shot to fame in Austria.
A move seemed inevitable and, when Hertha Berlin came calling in 2017, Lazaro headed to the Bundesliga to continue his upward trajectory.
While there, he was described as the best Austrian to grace the German top flight since David Alaba and it was no surprise when European giants Inter Milan made their move in the summer.
Things haven’t gone to plan at the San Siro though, with Lazaro – who has been capped 26 times for Austria – making just a handful of appearances this term.
What type of player is he?
The Bundesliga website offered a glowing report of Lazaro’s style of play during his time in Berlin.
“The young midfielder’s lightning feet both in speed of sprint and dribbling make him a must-watch player,” they said.
“He's also shown on plenty of occasions that he can help out further back, notably as a right wing-back, while his set-piece delivery is second to none.
What do we know about Newcastle United’s interest?
Reports first surfaced earlier this week that the Magpies were keen on a loan move for Lazaro this month as they bid to strengthen their attacking options.
Bruce was coy on any interest, but also didn’t shoot down the rumours and the deal has now been done.
Was anyone else interested?
Premier League rivals West Ham United were also understood to be monitoring Lazaro’s situation at Inter.
