One player that is known to be on Steve Bruce’s radar is Joe Willock following his remarkable loan spell from Arsenal last season.
Confirmation is still to be had on contracts as well, most notable Federico Fernandez, Fabian Schar, Andy Carroll, Paul Dummett and Dwight Gayle.
Despite reports of Bruce’s restricted transfer budget, all the early speculation points towards a busy window.
While it remains to be seen if that will be the case, the bookmakers have weighed with their predictions on who they think Bruce could target over the coming months:

5. Ainsley Maitland-Niles - 11/1
Maitland-Niles was linked with Newcastle in January but Joe Willock was the man Steve Bruce wanted. It is likely Maitland-Niles will leave Arsenal, either permanently or on loan, with Crystal Palace (4/1) and Leeds (5/1) top of the bookies' list. Photo: GARETH COPLEY

6. Ivan Toney - 10/1
Three years after the Magpies sold him to Peterborough United, Toney is going a long way to proving the doubters wrong after firing 31 goals during Brentford’s promotion to the Premier League. Bigger clubs have taken note… Photo: Catherine Ivill

7. Ross Barkley - 9/1
After spending last season on loan at Aston Villa, Barkley’s future at Chelsea is still to be decided. If he is to be loaned out again, then you can bet Newcastle won’t be the only club chasing the 27-year-old’s signature. Photo: Michael Regan

8. Allan Saint-Maximin - 8/1
The only potential outgoing on the list - and it’s a player Newcastle will definitely not want to see the back of. Saint-Maximin has spoken about national team and silverware ambitions, with Arsenal favourites to sign him at 8/1. Photo: STU FORSTER
