When Sven Goran Erikson and McClaren were in charge of the national team in the 2000s, there was a mention of a first England bow.

Nolan played 14 seasons in the Premier League with Bolton Wanderers, West Ham and the Magpies but failed earned a Three Lions cap.

McClaren was appointed Newcastle manager, four years after Nolan left St James’s Park having scored 30 goals across two-and-and-half seasons.

Speaking to Stadium Astro, the 37-year-old explained: “The most frustrating thing is Sven Goran Erikson and Steve McClaren.

“Every time I see them, they say to me ‘I should have picked you really’.

“I just said ‘don’t say that, – should have, could have, would have’. I nearly punched Steve when he said it to me.”

Nolan is currently a first-team coach at West Ham United.
