It sounds like the Magpies boss is considering changes this week ahead of the visit of last season’s Premier League champions Manchester City. But what changes could he make?
Here our NUFC writer Liam Kennedy picks his Newcastle starting XI for the weekend – and it’s fair to say there’s a few surprises in his selections.

9. Jetro Willems - Left wing-back
A winger more than a defender, Willems has been excellent for United in recent times. Hard to see even influential Matt Ritchie walking back in, when eventually fit. Photo: Catherine Ivill
I'd push ASM a little further up with licence to roam. Has the ability to keep Man City on their toes throughout and can take United from A to B at speed in a game which could see Bruce's men penned back for much of it. Photo: Catherine Ivill
Let's all just be honest here - Joelinton up top is just not working. We all know Gayle up top didn't really work either but it's worth a shot. Andy Carroll would be the choice for me but he does not look all that fit. Photo: Stu Forster
