Longstaff’s deal at St James’s Park is set to expire on June 30.

Steve Bruce – who promoted the 19-year-old to his squad last summer – wants Longstaff to sign a new contract, but time was already running out for Newcastle to secure him on a new deal before the Premier League was suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Bruce admitted in February that talks with Longstaff, linked with clubs at home and abroad, had hit an “impasse”.

“It’s a concern for us all, of course it is,” said United’s head coach. “I hope we can get that tied up, I really do. But, they’ve got the power these days, the players. We see it often now, with young players as well.”

The Gazette understands that there was no breakthrough before the coronavirus shutdown.

Fans share Bruce’s concern about Longstaff’s contractual situation, and the onus is on managing director Lee Charnley to come to an agreement with Longstaff and his representatives ahead of a possible resumption of the Premier League in the summer.

Speaking about his future at the time, he said: “Obviously, I want to stay at Newcastle. But the biggest thing for me is just to carry on playing well, and that will take care of itself.”

Longstaff made 12 first-team appearances – and scored three goals – in all competitions before the shutdown.

Meanwhile, it was revealed last month that Sean, Longstaff’s older brother, was set to change agent. The 22-year-old – who is looking for a new deal which reflects his status as a first-team player – will be represented by Pini Zahavi when his contract talks resume.

Longstaff, a target for Man United last summer, was asked for an update on talks in February after collecting the North East Football Writers’ young player of the year trophy.

“For me and Matty, we’re waiting for the club, really,” said Longstaff. “It’s up to them what they want to do.”
