Winger Ryan Fraser will start the match after recovering from a groin injury, while a few players have been left behind on Tyneside, notably Allan Saint-Maximin, who has just recovered from an ankle injury, and Jamaal Lascelles.

The Newcastle starting XI is as follows: Gillespie, Manquillo, Krafth, Fernandez, Lewis, Shelvey, S Longstaff, Murphy, Almiron, Fraser, Carroll.

Here’s how some supporters reacted to the team news on social media:

@StevenNUFC: Strong , decent line-up that no excuses

@nufcsanjay: Tonight will be difficult, but this should be strong enough to win. The fact that Carroll is starting is a massive indication that we need another striker in, he's far from good enough.

@Wezmcn: Very strong. Need to win this

@ComingHomeNUFC: Solid team this, should in theory be able to easily win.

@jegnufc91: This is what we want to see. A strong team for cup games regardless of who they are against. No excuses not to get into the quarter finals.

@GrahamRobson86: Very strong team. No excuses Brucey

@Doyler88kek: No excuses for Shelvey tonight. Needs to put a performance in after the last 2 woeful displays

@i_jamesmartin: I would love to see Andy Carroll score a goal in a Newcastle shirt again, like old times.

@ScoutNUFC: Almost exactly what I'd go for to be fair. Shame that Joe doesn't get another start in the cup, but can't complain about Miggy starting, unless he gets injured...
