The Magpies legend and record goalscorer was drafted in for the final eight games of the 2008/09 season in a bid to try and save the club from relegation.
Ultimately, Shearer cruelly fell short in his challenge, which started with a 2-0 defeat at home to Chelsea on April 4, 2009.
Indeed, the situation Newcastle currently find themselves in isn’t too dissimilar to when Shearer arrived – apart from under-fire Steve Bruce is likely to stay until the end of the campaign.

13. Danny Guthrie (on for Nolan)
Guthrie, 33, was released by League Two side Walsall in February, featuring 44 times in one-and-a-half seasons with the Saddlers. He’s currently without a club as he considers his next steps. Photo: Christopher Lee

14. Andy Carroll (on for Martins)
Approaching the end of his second season since returning to Newcastle in the summer of 2019, though has cut a frustrated figure this campaign following just four Premier League starts. His contract is due to expire in June. Photo: Christopher Lee
