Amanda Staveley, backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund and billionaire property investors David and Simon Reuben, has agreed a £300million for the club.

However, there has been no announcement yet from either party despite a clamour for information on Tyneside.

The Daily Mail report it’s the Saudi custom to wait to “full completion” before confirming any deal. This will come once the Premier League has completed its owners’ and directors’ test, which is expected to take several weeks.

It's claimed that United owner Mike Ashley had wanted to confirm the sale last week, but the club’s prospective Saudi owners insisted on delaying the announcement. The Premier League have also made no comment on the proposed takeover, which will lead to significant investment – on and off the pitch – at St James’s Park.
