Newcastle United second summer transfer exit confirmed - midfielder departs & official statement issued
Newcastle United transfers: The Magpies have officially confirmed a second permanent summer transfer departure following Anthony Gordon’s exit.
Newcastle United have confirmed another transfer departure, with 20-year-old midfielder Travis Hernes making his loan move to Groningen permanent.
It follows Anthony Gordon’s £70million sale to Barcelona last week and the confirmation of Kieran Trippier, Emil Krafth, Matt Targett, John Ruddy, Max Thompson and Aaron Ramsdale departing at the end of their respective deals.
Hernes spent the 2025/26 season on loan at Groningen, making 11 appearances in all competitions. The young midfielder joined Newcastle from Shrewsbury Town in 2023 after catching the eye by scoring on his professional debut for the Shrews at age 16.

The Norway youth international became a regular at Under-21s level at Newcastle and featured for the first-team in friendly matches. The closest he came to making a competitive first-team appearance for the Magpies came during the 2023/24 campaign, where he was named on the bench in the FA Cup away win at Fulham and Premier League victory at Aston Villa in January 2024, but remained an unused substitute.
The second half of the 2024/25 campaign saw Hernes loaned out to Danish club Aalborg. He made 12 league appearances but was unable to help the side avoid relegation.
A statement released by Newcastle confirmed Hernes has joined Groningen for ‘an undisclosed fee’ before adding: “Everybody at Newcastle United would like to thank Travis for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future.”
