Charnley, the club’s managing director and sole director, has been heavily criticised over the years by supporters unhappy with the club’s transfer dealings under Mike Ashley’s owernship.

Also, Charnley, unlike most other Premier League CEOs, rarely speaks in public or fields questions from journalists, and the club’s communication under his watch has been another source of frustration for supporters.

However, the Newcastle Fans Food Bank have expressed their “appreciation” for Charnley, who volunteered in their kitchen at Christmas, “oversaw refurbishment” of the Newcastle West End Foodbank’s Benwell centre by the club, and has supported them “from day one”.

In a tweet, they said: “The @WEFoodbank have expressed their appreciation for Lee Charnley, who as well as volunteering in the kitchen at Christmas, oversaw @NUFC’s refurbishment of the Benwell Centre and has supported the @NUFCFoodBank from day one, for which we are grateful.”
