Newcastle United have emerged as favourites to sign Arsenal defender Rob Holding on a season-long loan, according to reports in The Athletic.

Sky Sports report, however, that a deal for the defender is ‘still some way off’.

The Magpies have also enquired about Holding’s Arsenal teammate Ainsley Maitland-Niles but the Sunday Telegraph claims the club have been put off by the £25m asking price.

The Gunners rejected a £15m offer from Wolves last week for the 23-year-old, who was named man of the match as the Gunners defeated Liverpool in yesterday’s Community Shield match at Wembley.

Elsewhere, Mali international striker Moussa Marega looks set to leave Porto and is refusing to sign a new deal and has declared his intention to leave.

A Bola state that, rather than lose the striker on a free, the Portgual club are looking for buyers this summer, one of which could be Newcastle United.

However reports in the United Kingdom appear to have poured cold water on a potential deal, with Sky Sports stating that ‘there’s been no talks/approach for Moussa Marega of Porto.’

Finally, The Daily Mail claims Norwich left-back Jamal Lewis, ex-Bournemouth winger Ryan Fraser – who currently available on a free – and Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson are all being looked at by Newcastle United.
