'We have to be ready for it': Steve Bruce's message ahead of Newcastle United's relegation run-in

Newcastle United’s players must be ready for their survival bid to go down to the wire.

That was the view of Steve Bruce after his team's goalless draw against West Bromwich Albion yesterday. That result – and Fulham’s win over Liverpool – has left the club just one point above the Premier League’s relegation zone with 11 games left to play.

Newcastle’s final game of the season is away to Fulham on May 23.

Asked if the club’s fate may not be decided until the end of the season, Bruce said: “We have to be ready for it. We sincerely hope not. We hope that we can pick up enough points.

"We were dealt a cruel blow last week with the loss of (Miguel) Almiron and Allan (Saint-Maximin), and, of course, Callum Wilson, is a big blow for anybody. To be without them and still get a point, really, really pleases me with their attitude and spirit, because that’s what got them the point.”
