Some Newcastle United vented their frustration after Saturday’s goalless draw.

However, Bruce – who changed his formation from the game – felt they were more frustrated with the result than the performance.

“They're disappointed,” said Bruce, whose side have failed to score for four successive Premier League games. “Of course, we missed a big chance in the last 30 seconds as well.

“Look, since I've been here, the stadium has been nothing short of terrific towards them. I think they've enjoyed it better than what they have seen. To get more attempts, to get us further up the pitch and to put another forward in rather than having a defender, has given them food for thought in the pub on the way home.”

Bruce switched to a back four and set up his team in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Asked if he wished he had made the change sooner, United’s head coach said: “When you're doing OK, and as I've said repeatedly, they're comfortable with what they've done.

“I just thought over the last three, four weeks that the attacking threat has disappeared, and we've leaked in a few goals, too, which has been our mantra this year – to be difficult to play against.

“Especially here, it stacks up – we've got the best defensive record. I wish we had the most goals record, but that's something we have got to improve on, but it was much better, so we'll see what that brings.”
