Just one Premier League goal is all United have to show for their £40million outlay and while performances have improved, prior to football lockdown, goals continued to elude the Brazilian.
Here we take a look at the most expensive Premier League buys outside of the supposed ‘big six’ – and rank where Joelinton’s fee sits.
5. Richarlison - £35.2m
Another big-money Brazilian import, first signed by Watford and taken to Everton by Marco Silva. Has blown hot and cold during his time at Goodison Park, but is a player with an amazing amount of talent. Signed in 2018. Photo: Mike Hewitt
6. Raul Jimenez - £34.2m
Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Raul Jimenez has been a sensational buy. His powerful displays leading the line for Wolves has seen them compete on two fronts this campaign. The former Atletico Madrid, Club America and Benfica forward has 22 goals in 45 games this season. He scored 21 goals on loan last. Photo: Laurence Griffiths
7. Felipe Anderson - £34.2m
West Ham shelled out big to sign Lazio winger Anderson last summer but none of their high-profile signings have really impressed at the London Stadium. Anderson has returned just one goal and four assists in 22 games. Photo: OLI SCARFF
8. Romelu Lukaku - £31.8
Everton paid a then club record fee to land Belgian international Lukaku back in 2014, who'd been a revelation during a loan spell at Goodison Park. He was later sold on to Manchester United for more than double that. Photo: Alex Livesey
