Will Osula sets target after Newcastle United and Denmark breakthrough
Newcastle United forward Will Osula earned his first senior cap for Denmark in a friendly with DR Congo last week.
Will Osula racked up another notable career milestone last week when the Newcastle United forward made his senior international debut for Denmark.
After scoring eight goals in 15 appearances at Under-21 level, Osula earned a maiden senior call-up for a World Cup qualifier double-header against Scotland and Greece last year - but he remained as an unused substitute in both fixtures. That pattern continued during World Cup play-off games with North Macedonia and Czechia earlier this year - but Osula’s form at club level was rewarded when he came off the bench to replace Manchester United’s Patrick Dorgu during a goalless draw against Yoane Wissa’s DR Congo last week.
Osula then made his first start at senior level as Denmark faced Ukraine on Sunday - although the fixture was abandoned midway through the second-half after former Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder collapsed on the pitch before being taken to hospital for further examination. Denmark’s national team doctor Morten Boeson clarified the situation on Sunday evening, saying: "We are in ongoing contact with him and the doctors at the hospital. But Christian is doing well, and he asked me to send his regards to all the players and tell them that he was OK."
For Osula, Sunday’s meeting with Ukraine marked the end of what has been the most productive season of his career as he gradually established himself in Eddie Howe’s starting lineup and rewarded his manager by six goals in his last nine appearances. His form at club level has now thrust him into the senior setup with Denmark and the former Sheffield United prospect is keen to continue shining for both club and country after reflecting on a long-awaited senior debut with the latter.
The Magpies forward told Danish outlet Bold: “Now I have made my debut and I am very grateful for that. If I continue to play well at club level, I hope I can become important for the national team and play a role here. I have to keep showing what I can do on the field and keep knocking.”
