The Toon Army took the lead in an entertaining clash against Southampton at St. James’ Park courtesy of a debut strike from Gunners loanee Chris Willock.

The 21-year-old was given the nod against the Saints after completing a deadline day switch to the north east, and repaid Steve Bruce’s faith almost immediately with a composed finish in the 16th minute.

Willock’s goal sparked celebrations from Wright on social media, with the pundit tweeting his support for the midfielder.

Writing on his personal Twitter account, he said: “Joe!!!!!”, followed by a series of love heart emojis.

Toon legend and fellow BBC pundit Shearer was quick to pick up on the tweet, responding: “Wrighty is a Geordie!!!”

Match of the day host Gary Lineker also got in on the action, replying to Shearer’s tweet: “Worighty”.

Wright’s interest in the Toon Army is likely to sky-rocket now that Willock is plying his trade in the north east.

A devoted Gunner, the 57-year-old will be fully aware of the potential that the youngster possesses, especially considering the fact the he turned out 17 times for Arsenal this season prior to making the move to Tyneside.

Wright is not the only former Gunner to have talked up Willock in recent days either.

Paul Merson claimed that his arrival at St. James’ Park could represent a “massive bonus” prior to the transfer being made official.
