The hosts had three goals disallowed and were booed off in Salvador.

Rondon – who scored 12 goals for loan club Newcastle United last season – posted a team photograph on Twitter after the game. He tweeted: “Proud of this family, let’s keep on working!”

Venezuela coach Rafael Dudamel said: "We played an almost perfect game against a team of brilliant individuals. Long live VAR.”

Meanwhile, United manager Rafa Benitez will want to re-sign Rondon – if he himself stays at the club beyond June 30, when his contract expires.

Newcastle’s hierarchy blocked a permanent move for the 29-year-old last summer – because of his age. Rondon, again, has a £16.5million release clause in his West Bromwich Albion contract.
