Andy Carroll handed shock Newcastle United start, Joelinton dropped

The striker – who rejoined the club as a free agent in August – will lead the line against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane tonight (7.30pm kick-off) recovering from a rib injury. Joelinton drops down to the bench. Otherwise, Steve Bruce has named an unchanged side.

“Certainly, over the next few weeks, you’re going to have to use the squad,” said head coach Bruce. “(This) is a different game, we’ve only played Sunday, but if you look towards the end of the month, it’s a ridiculous schedule, really.

“For the teams playing in Europe, it’s absolutely ludicrous. We’ll have to adapt, and have a bit of freshness when needed.”
