Liam Kennedy’s view

It’s been a solid enough start from Shields, who have been on the front foot from the off. There looks to be gaps for them to exploit down the flanks on the counter, but so far they’ve lacked that final ball.

A chipped cross from the left after a jinking run by Osei found Briggs at the back post, but his volley was cleared off the line by Maher.

So close to 1-0.

Shields well on top early doors…

South Shields knocking on the door

Callum Ross is tee’d up for an effort at goal but the midfielder is high, wide and handsome. It comes following Shields’ best move of the match as Osei’s trickery set Kempster down the left, his run halted in the area only for Ross to miss the target.

20’ - Here’s what non-league expert Mark Carruthers has thought of the game so far...

Graham Fenton and Lee Picton could not have wished for a more positive start from their side.  All that is missing is that first goal and you feel that they need to get it when they are so clearly on top.  Robert Briggs is causing all sorts of problems in that number ten role and Darius Osei looks a real threat with his pace and power.

GOOOOAAAA... NO! Offside

So, so close to an opener for Shields. Pandemonium in the stands but it’s short-lived as a flash of yellow on the right kills the joy…

Somehow the referee has missed that one. Shields can feel hard done to…

Kempster cross Osei header. 1-0!

The Mariners’ frontman rises highest at the front post to nod in the opener. You won’t see many better headers than that today. And it’s exactly what the doctor ordered for Shields, who’ve been dominant so far.

HT - and Shields are 45 minutes away from round one proper!
