South Shields FC captain Robbie Tinkler agrees new two-year deal

There was further good news from South Shields as captain Robbie Tinkler has signed a new contract at Mariners Park.

South Shields FC captain Robbie Tinkler has expressed his delight over signing a new two-year deal.

The former York City and Aldershot Town defender enjoyed a successful first season with the Mariners after joining them following his departure from National League neighbours Gateshead last summer. The 28-year-old made 44 appearances in all competitions under former Mariners boss Ian Watson and his performances earned him a place in the National League North team of the season.

Tinkler will continue to lead the Mariners under new head coach Mike Williamson and has past experience of working with the former Newcastle United defender during his time in charge of Gateshead. With the ink now dry on his new two-year deal, the experienced defender is determined to build on a strong first season with South Shields and has revealed his hunger to push for promotion into non-league’s top tier once again during the new campaign.

He told the club website: “I'm absolutely delighted to sign a new two-year deal with South Shields. It was an easy decision for me because I've loved every minute since joining the club. From the players and staff to the supporters, everyone has made me feel at home, and I believe we're building something really special here. It's a privilege to captain this team and wear the shirt every week, and I feel we've got a group that's hungry to keep improving and competing at the top end of the league.

“The fans have been brilliant with me from day one, and their support means everything to the lads. I'm grateful to the manager and everyone at the club for the faith they've shown in me, and now it's about repaying that trust by giving everything on the pitch. I'm excited for what the next two years hold, and hopefully together we can create plenty more special memories and bring success to South Shields."

Tinkler will be back in action on Saturday when the Mariners host a Sunderland XI in a midday kick-off.
