The 20-year-old came through the Mariners academy and made his first-team debut in an Integro Cup tie against North East rivals Morpeth Town in September 2018.

He went on to make another two senior appearances including an impressive display in the Durham Challenge Cup Final defeat against Shildon at the Stadium of Light.

Thompson’s progression was rewarded with a first-team contract at the end of his maiden campaign and continued his development with a loan spell at Ebac Northern League club West Auckland Town last season.

However, his time at the 1st Cloud Arena has now come to an end after a mutual agreement was reached to end his contract to allow the youngster to find a new club.

Mariners manager Graham Fenton expressed his sadness at Thompson’s departure and believes that his next club will “have a really good player on their hands”.

He told the club website: “It’s really sad that it has come to an end with Arron Thompson.

“He has been an absolute pleasure to work with and has represented the club unbelievably well during his time with the Academy and the first-team.

“I’m sure he will go on to do well because of his attitude, application and ability.

“Unfortunately, he won’t be continuing on the journey with us at this time but you never know what might happen in the future.

“He is a diamond of a person and whichever club he goes to will have a really good player on their hands.”
