Grigg has been a major disappointment since signing from Wigan Athletic in the last January window, the 28-year-old striker has scored just three goals this season and just one in League One.

The Sun report Blackpool boss – and former Black Cats manager – Simon Grayson remains keen on a loan deal this month but would need Sunderland to accept a ‘low wage contribution’.

Phil Parkinson has previously spoken highly of Grigg, speaking in November he said: “We definitely won’t give up on him, we will keep working with him, I see his qualities in training, his calmness in finishing both with his feet and his head as well.”

However, Grigg has struggled for game time since Charlie Wyke returned from injury. Wyke has led the Sunderland attack over Christmas.
