Sunderland striker deal latest as interest hots-up in available Championship frontman
With the transfer window now open, Sunderland and their rivals are looking to clinch some early deals.
While some clubs have already dipped into the market, the Black Cats are far from alone in taking their time over sealing a first signing.
And while reports have suggested that a transfer breakthrough may be close, the club’s recruitment team know that much work lays ahead.
With seven players having departed the club already this summer – and an out-of-contract quartet still in discussions over fresh terms – there could be a fairly substantial rebuild on the cards as the Wearsiders look to escape League One at the fourth time of asking.

And with a number of players linked, we take a look at the latest Sunderland AFC transfer rumours and news:
Door opens for Sunderland to make move for striker ‘target’
St Johnstone boss Callum Davidson has confirmed that the Scottish side are ‘moving on’ from Guy Melamed - opening the door for a potential move to Sunderland.
The Black Cats are one of a number of clubs to have been linked with the Israeli striker, who is now a free agent.
Ipswich Town and Portsmouth have also been linked with moves for Melamed, who was offered fresh terms north of the border.
But Davidson has now confirmed that St Johnstone will be moving on from the 28-year-old after talks failed to progress.
Speaking to The Courier, he said: “I think Guy was waiting to see what options were available to him.
“We put an offer to him. It was a ‘wait and see’ but we haven’t heard anything back.
“We’ve got to move on from that as well.
“We made him a really good offer and it was a while ago now – well before the season finished.
“I’ve got to keep moving forward and looking at other strikers who are available.
“Hopefully we can get someone tied up pretty soon and start bringing new faces in.”
Melamed himself also confirmed he would be leaving the club in a post on Instagram.
He wrote: “It’s time to say goodbye. I’m officially leaving St Johnstone and I only have good things to say about the club.
"I was happy to be an important part of the biggest year in the history of the club. Thanks to the gaffer, players and all the staff.
“Finally, fans who might not have been in the stadium but I could feel their support. Come on Saints.”
Sunderland-linked striker subject of FOUR bids
Sunderland were one of a host of clubs linked with a move for Preston North End striker Jayden Stockley in January.
The towering frontman eventually joined Charlton Athletic on loan and went on to net eight times during his time at The Valley.
Stockley is set to leave Preston permanently this summer and the Lancashire Evening Post claim that four League One clubs have already lodged bids for the former Exeter man.
Portsmouth are believed to be leading the chase, while Charlton and Sheffield Wednesday have also registered an interest.
