Andrew Taylor was in charge as the Black Cats drew 1-1 with Burton Albion following Phil Parkinson’s dismissal last weekend.

A number of names have entered the frame, including Danny Cowley, Gus Poyet, Lee Johnson and Daniel Stendel.

Speaking on Quest, however, former Liverpool, Leeds United and Aston Villa left-back Stephen Warnock named Paul Cook as the man he believes can change Sunderland’s fortunes around.

“I think it’s a role that needs a strong figure, who’s been under pressure before and knows what it’s like to manage a big club,” the 36-year-old explained.

“You think of what he did at Portsmouth and Wigan, I think he could do it at Sunderland too.”

Cook and Warnock were briefly at Wigan together, albeit for a month following the latter’s departure in June 2017

Former Lincoln City and Huddersfield boss Cowley remains favourite with the bookies.
