January transfer window: Sunderland deals, deadline time, deal sheet explained

There is just over one week remaining in the January transfer window - and Premier League clubs are working hard to secure deals before the deadline.

Sunderland enjoyed a productive summer transfer window as inspired additions such as Robin Roefs, Granit Xhaka and Omar Alderete were added to their squad in preparation for their return to the Premier League.

The benefits of their ambitious summer recruitment are clear to see as Regis le Bris’ side have spent the majority of the season in and around the European places and have racked up some impressive wins against the likes of Brentford, Newcastle United and Chelsea, as well as earning deserved points against Manchester City and Liverpool.

There was always a feeling the January transfer window would be a quieter affair - although one new face has arrived in the form of Ivorian winger Jocelin Ta Bi after a cut price deal was agreed with Israeli club Maccabi Netanya. There have been outgoing deals with fringe men Jay Matete and Joe Anderson joining MK Dons and Barrow respectively. Goalkeeper Blondy Nna Noukeu has joined French second tier club Boulogne, Timothee Pembele is spending the rest of the season on loan at Le Havre and young centre back Zak Johnson has secured a temporary move to National League title contenders York City.

A number of Academy of Light products have also completed loan moves away from Wearside and Ethan Moore becoming the latest to depart after joining Gateshead.

Title contenders Manchester City have been the biggest spenders in the window so far after spending around £84m to land Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi and Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo. Tottenham Hotspur has authorised two eye-catching deals with winger Brennan Johnson joining Palace in a £35m agreement before the North London club tempted former Chelsea man Conor Gallagher back to the Premier League after striking a £34m deal with Atletico Madrid. West Ham have looked to boost their bid to avoid relegation with the £25m capture of Lazio striker Taty Castellanos.

When does the January transfer window come to a close?

There is just over a week to go in the January transfer window and clubs are rushing to get deals completed. There will be one last dash when deadline day arrives on Monday, February 2 and the Premier League have confirmed clubs will have until 7pm to complete any deals. However, there is a way they can secure two additional hours to tie up the loose ends of any agreements.

What is a transfer deal sheet?

The deal sheet allows a club to confirm an agreement has been reached with a rival club and enables them to receive two additional hours to complete the rest of the paperwork. For next Monday’s 7pm deadline, the deal sheet cannot be submitted before 5pm - but must arrive before the window closes. Once lodged, a club would then have until 9pm to finalise the transfer.
