Kevin Phillips has told Kyle Lafferty he can become a Sunderland hero – if he can fire the Black Cats to promotion.

Lafferty looks set to make his full debut for Sunderland against Ipswich Town this weekend, with Charlie Wyke a doubt through an injury sustained during the defeat at Portsmouth.

And club legend Phillips has backed the 32-year-old to use his big game experience to the Black Cats’ benefit as they go in search of promotion from League One at the second attempt.

“He has played in big games in Scotland like the Old Firm,” explained Phillips, speaking to Football Insider.

“He has got to come in now and fill the void. If he can come in and score goals now he can make himself a hero, especially if he can get Sunderland into the play-offs.

“I hope he can get off to a good start.”
