The Turk returned to the heart of defence during the 1-0 defeat at Priestfield, meaning the Black Cats have now gone four games without tasting victory.

And Ozturk has revealed the mood in the dressing room after another poor performance and result, but insists the squad are remaining upbeat ahead of two crucial fixtures - as Coventry City and Burton Albion prepare to visit the Stadium of Light.

“We have a team, believe me, where everybody wants to win every game. It doesn’t matter which cup or if you play in the league or in a cup.

“We need to stay positive, and we have two really important games so that can change a lot.”

Ozturk was paired with Laurens De Bock and youngster Brandon Taylor in the Black Cats’ back three, with Taylor in particular catching the eye.

“I think with young Brandon at the back, I think he did really well,” said Ozturk. “These kind of things are the positives of this game but we are really disappointed about the result.

“But we have two important league games ahead. Two home games, so we want to win both of them and put ourselves in a good position.”
