Substitute Charlie Wyke had headed home to hand the Black Cats the lead, with the game level at 0-0 when the striker reacted quickest to steer the ball home.

But despite the assistant referee not flagging as Wyke sent the ball past Jack Bonham, referee Andy Woolmer ruled the strike out after a discussion with the linesman.

Assistant manager Steve Parkin’s protests earned him a yellow card, and Sunderland fans on social media were equally aggrieved with the decision.

Here’s what they had to say:

@Blackie981294 said: “Linesman has just guessed there. Doesn't have a clue what he is doing”

@SunderlandAFCI posted: “League One referees are absolutely shocking”

@AdamFulwell_ added: “So the referee gave an offside when the lino didn’t originally flag?”

@BazMackem commented: “Refs once again. That's a goal”

@shannon_carney1 tweeted: “Absolutely fuming me”

@EthanBailes123 said: “The officials in this league are awful! #SAFC”

@JofraJones92 added: “Any idea why that was disallowed? Ref didn't blow his whistle, lino didn't flag. Gillingham players protest. Ref talks to lino who then rules it out.”

@jamie_davison1 commented: “Typical that mind”

@Elliot_d_p added: “Never offside that, officials have lost us a fair few points this season”

@ajwilso argued: “It’s probably for the guy in front of the keeper rather than Wyke”

But @mark_bussey45 said: “Can see he starts behind the defender”
