The Black Cats also just three points behind league-leaders Hull City with two games in hand over Grant McCann’s club and a match to play against the Tigers.
Anichebe, commenting on Instagram, had this four-word plea to his old club ahead of the run-in.
He said: “Keep it going guys!”

Former Sunderland defender Micky Gray has shared a joke with a Newcastle United supporter
The situation at the top of the table prompted Gray to remark that Sunderland had ‘10 cup finals’ left to play in League One.

Gray, however, was quick to respond and shared a joke regarding Newcastle United’s poor Premier League position.
He said: “Your right it is but when we win them we will be playing you next season!”
