McGeady – who used to play for the Russian outfit – set up Lynden Gooch’s winner in the Papa John’s Trophy final on Sunday afternoon.

The tense 1-0 victory over Tranmere Rovers marked the end of a 48-year wait for a win at the national stadium.

The win sparked scenes of celebration from Sunderland players with the 34-year-old Republic of Ireland international at the heart of it all.

Indeed, McGeady’s former club Spartak Moscow, who he turned out for between 2010 and 2014, congratulated their former player on social media following the game.

On Twitter, Spartak Moscow posted: “Hats off to our former man Aiden McGeady on winning the EFL Trophy (extremely yummy sponsorship name nowadays tbh) with @SunderlandAFC!”

Sunderland face Accrington Stanley at the Wham Stadium on Wednesday evening as Lee Johnson’s men look to continue their assault on the automatic promotion places.
