Sunderland boss explains what went wrong in FA Cup defeat to League Two Mansfield

George Lapslie's header early in the second half was enough to see Mansfield Town through the contest at the Stadium of Light.

The Black Cats pushed hard for a winner late on, but didn't produce enough to test opposition goalkeeper Marek Stech.

Danny Graham missed a gilt-edged chance in the opening minutes of the contest, but the away side were good value for their victory.

Most damningly for the Black Cats, it was their first win in any competitive fixture this season.

Reflecting on the game, Parkinson suggested that his forward players did not do enough.

Charlie Wyke was rested for the game, with Graham, Will Grigg and Chris Maguire leading the line.

"I think over the course over the game we've put in enough quality deliveries into the box to win the game," Parkinsn said.

"OK, our decision making wasn't always great, and the quality wasn't always great, but there was enough over 90 minutes to win.

"Our desire and our movement to get across people in the box and make something of those movements wasn't good enough to get through.

"The one cross they've put in, the lad has got in with real desire to head in.

"I've just sat there now and gone through all the deliveries we've put in, and there was enough quality going into the box today to win."

Sunderland had plenty of possession through the contest, but were only able to turn that into four shots on target.

"I think there was an element of playing sideways, not taking up the space quickly and committing players.

"There was definitely an element of that.

"Even within that, there's still, as I've said, enough chances and enough moments to score.

"We've got to look at the movement and the desire. If you're putting 38 crosses into the box over the course of the game, then really that should result in at least two or three goals."

Parkinson had made eight changes for the game, but conceded that the side he picked was more than strong enough to progress.

"We can't argue with that," he said.

"We've lost 1-0 to Mansfield at home.

"We said before the game that they would be lifted by the new manager, and you could see that. But we had good enough players to rise above that and go on win.

"Was all the play good? No? Were there times could we have stepped in quicker and committed more players? Yes. But we've had enough quality around the box to produce a clinical finish, and we couldn't manage that.

"I picked a team that I thought was capable of winning," he added.

"There were one or two that were injured, and one or two that we chose not to play because they'd played a lot of football and we wanted to play other players. But we had a team strong enough to win the game."
