Sunderland closing in on former Hartlepool United midfielder
The 21-year-old, who left Pools at the end of last season, has had a number of admirers in the EFL.
But various reports now claim it’s Sunderland who have won the race for his signature - with Hawkes set to team-up with the club’s under-23 side.

Sunderland Under-23s signed Kenton Richardson earlier this summer.
The 21-year-old full-back made over 50 senior appearances in all competitions and has now signed a two-year deal on Wearside.
Coach Elliott Dickman said: “We’re very pleased with the signing of Kenton. He has a lot of experience at National League level despite his young age, so that’s going to add something to our group and really help the younger players.
"His attitude is very good and it’s down to him now to progress to the first team.”
