Florent Ghisolfi confirms major contract boost and hints at next step for 'exceptional' Sunderland youngster
One of Sunderland’s best academy prospects has agreed a new and improved long-term deal at the club
Sunderland have confirmed that one of their brightest young talents has signed a new long-term deal at the club.
Goalkeeper and youth international Matty Young has, as reported by The Echo earlier this month, signed a new and improved deal running until the summer of 2030. Still just 19, Young has already amassed 90 appearances in senior football and has been Salford City’s number one this season. Young will be between the goalposts at Wembley on Monday afternoon as his team face Notts County in the League Two play-off final.
Sunderland’s director of football Florent Ghisolfi has hailed Young’s progress as ‘exceptional’ and confirmed that he is set to go out on loan to a higher level next season.
“We are very happy that Matty has committed his future to Sunderland because we believe we are building something important together,” Ghisolfi said.
“For a goalkeeper of his age to already have so much senior experience is exceptional, and his progress over the last two seasons has been outstanding. Our ambition is for Sunderland to be the best environment in England for goalkeepers, with a clear pathway, strong competition, and the opportunity to develop through senior football. Matty has embraced every challenge so far, and the next step for him will be to continue his progression at a higher level next season. For now, his focus is on the Play-Off Final at Wembley Stadium, and everyone at Sunderland will be supporting him.”

What Matty Young said about his new Sunderland contract
Young said he was ‘over the moon’ to have committed his future to the club and that it was a special moment for his family.
“I am over the moon to sign this contract,” he said.
“It proves the last two years out on loan have been worth it. I am proud of the achievement, but I am still focused and determined to keep progressing. The loans over the last two years have really helped me grow up and define who I am as a goalkeeper – understanding my strengths, my weaknesses, and what I need to improve on every day. As a Sunderland supporter, being in and around this Club means everything to me. My family are Sunderland through and through, so for them to see me sign this contract is really special.”
