The Black Cats are in the market for a loan signing in defence following injuries to Arbenit Xhemajli, out for the season, and Morgan Feeney, facing a couple of months out, while Denver Hume is a doubt for the weekend trip to Swindon Town.

Sunderland have until 5pm on Friday to complete a deal.

Phil Parkinson has already stated that the club could move for a free agent signing next week, clubs can still sign players who are unattached even after today’s teatime deadline.

Sanderson has also been linked with a move to Cardiff City, who he had a loan spell at last season.

Sky Sports report: “The defender had interest from Championship clubs earlier in the window following a loan spell at Cardiff last season.”

Sunderland have so far signed six players this transfer window.
