Black Cats boss Lee Johnson says his injury situation has improved ahead of the final, and the Wearsiders were able to welcome back Tom Flanagan and Lynden Gooch during their 2-0 win at Portsmouth.

Conor McLaughlin has also been absent following a hernia operation but could return to face Tranmere.

When asked about injuries ahead of the match, Johnson said: “We are slightly depleted but are hopeful a couple will return.

“Conor McLaughlin should be back if we need him, if selected. Bailey Wright is out. Denver Hume is nearly there but it probably comes a bit too soon for.

Forward Aiden O’Brien was substituted with a tight hamstring against Portsmouth and will be assessed for the game at Wembley.

“We’ll have a look at O’Brien tomorrow and give him a fitness test,” Johnson added.
