The youngster joined the Black Cats on a trial basis in November, and featured for Elliott Dickman’s under-23 side in games against Spennymoor Town and Stoke City U23s.

But Mukena has now departed the Stadium of Light, with the club set to pursue alternative targets as they look to bolster their second string squad during the January window.

Confirming his signature, a club statement said: “We’re delighted to announce the signing of former Watford U23 defender Joy Mukena.

“Joy goes straight into the squad to face Hornchurch & Marlow.”

Sunderland are understood to be in the market for players to strengthen their under-23 side, having seen a number of their star men head out on loan this term.
