Lee Johnson has been in the market for some extra pace in forward areas this month and the Daily Mail suggest that he has finally landed his man in Jones.

The Northern Irish international is set to move to the Stadium of Light on loan until the end of the season and will become Sunderland's second signing of the January window – following Carl Winchester through the door.

Jones, who came through the ranks at Middlesbrough, joined Kilmarnock in 2016 before his impressive performances opened the door for a move to Ibrox three years later.

But he has struggled for regular game time since moving to Rangers and has fallen further down the pecking order this term – having been issued with a seven-game ban for breaching COVID protocols in November.

Jones could sign for Sunderland in time to play against Gillingham on Saturday, or could make his debut in the Papa John’s Trophy tie at MK Dons next Tuesday.

Sunderland remain in the hunt for new faces, with Johnson this week targeting as many as three more additions before the window closes

One of those looks set to be Jones, while another is likely to be a left-back given Denver Hume’s recent injury setback.

The Black Cats could also yet target another forward, with Will Grigg then prepared to head out the door on loan – with a move to Shrewsbury Town on the cards.
