Sunderland and Newcastle United's squad values compared to Premier League rivals ahead of Tyne-Wear derby

Sunderland’s squad has been overhauled since they claimed promotion into the Premier League last season.

There can be no doubt Sunderland’s squad has been transformed since they secured a long-awaited return to the Premier League with a dramatic Championship play-off final win against Sheffield United just over ten months ago.

That Wembley triumph proved to be the last hurrah for many members of the Black Cats squad as a transformative and overwhelmingly ambitious summer transfer window laid the foundations for a largely positive return to English football’s top flight. Few could have predicted what was to follow as the Stadium of Light hierarchy gave the green light to significant changes with Regis Le Bris’ squad as the likes of Jobe Bellingham and Wembley hero Tommy Watson departed, with the latter already agreeing to a move to Brighton and Hove Albion prior to his landmark moment under the arch.

In their place came new heroes, unexpected additions and some shrewd signings as the likes of highly-rated Strasbourg midfielder Habib Diarra, talented Dutch goalkeeper Robin Roefs and former Arsenal captain Granit Xhaka all agreed to moves to Wearside as over £155m was spent before the summer transfer window came to a close. The spending continued in January as wingers Jocelin Ta Bi and Nilson Angulo and goalkeeper Melker Ellborg all arrived and the likes of Simon Adingra, Dan Neil, Anthony Patterson and Arthur Massuaku all departed on loan deals. There were permanent departures too as Patrick Roberts joined Birmingham City after spending time on loan with the Championship club and Adil Aouchiche, Jay Matete and Ian Poveda all found new homes.

The new look Sunderland squad have already created some memorable moments throughout the season with wins against the likes of Chelsea, Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United - and they will look to rack up another when they aim to complete a league double over the latter in Sunday’s Tyne-Wear derby at St James Park. The Magpies were also one of the stories of the summer transfer window as star striker Alexander Isak departed in a British transfer record move to Liverpool and Brentford star Yoane Wissa and Germany international Nick Woltemade, who scored an own goal at the Stadium of Light in December, were brought in to replace the Swede. But how do the values of Sunderland and Newcastle’s squad compare and how do they compare to their rivals across the Premier League?
