But which players put themselves on the radar of Steve Bruce and Phil Parkinson in the Premier League 2 clash?
We take a look at NINE of the best performers on the evening, who could be set to stake their claim for a first team place moving forward.

5. ROSAIRE LONGELO
Up against the highly-rated Bali Mumba, Longelo shone and played a key role in Newcastle's opener with a fine run and delivery. He caused Sunderland no end of problems throughout the evening with his raw pace matched with a fine end product. 6. JOE HUGILL
It's easy to forget that Hugill, fast-tracked into the under-23 setup, is still only 16. He was always a willing runner at St James's Park and netted a fine brace against West Ham United within the last fortnight. He's one who is already making waves at the Academy of Light. | Getty Images Photo: Nick Taylor/Liverpool FC

7. TOM ALLAN
Steve Bruce is known to be a fond admirer of Allen, who has been on something of a hot streak in recent weeks. His early goal was followed up by an industrious performance on the right flank. Expect more first-team opportunities if his fine form continues. | Getty Images Photo: Ian MacNicol

8. TYLER HAMILTON
Another of Sunderland's trio of triallists, Hamilton was the pick of the bunch for the Black Cats. He shone at both ends as he put in a promising performance on the left flank and, if he remains on Wearside, could be one to keep a close eye on. | Getty Images Photo: Stephen Pond
