The 31-year-old has joined Tranmere from Bradford City, but his deal wasn’t confirmed in time for him to feature against Sunderland at Prenton Park.

EFL rules state that signings must be completed by Noon the day before a game in order for the player in question to play – but Vaughan’s deal wasn’t sanctioned in time, hence he will have to sit out the clash on Merseyside.

A Tranmere club statement confirmed: “Vaughan is eligible to make his Rovers debut in Saturday’s visit to Bolton Wanderers in Sky Bet League One.”

Vaughan played against the Black Cats last season for Portsmouth, but failed to make a telling impact as Sunderland progressed to the League One play-off final.
