Watch the day Newcastle United sealed promotion in front of biggest crowd in England - with Keegan, Waddle and Beardsley running riot

On May 5, 1984 a crowd of 36,866 saw United return to the top flight for the first time in six years as Keegan, Beardsley and Waddle shared the goals in a 4-0 Second Division drubbing of Derby County.
Remarkably, it was the highest attendance in the Football League that day. The next highest was 28,802 who were at Goodison Park for the First Division fixture between Everton and Manchester United.

Hide AdThe Rams had some legend of their own – ex-Scotland wizard Archie Gemmill, former European Cup-winning duo Kenny Burns and John Robertson, and England defender Dave Watson.
But the veterans were no match for the Magpies own superstar, Keegan, and the two young guns.
Keegan opened the scoring with a brave header after Waddle’s electric run and cross, before Beardsley danced through for the second.
The front three then combined after the break with one-touch football to let Waddle slide in the third before Beardsley put the seal on the win, and promotion, with a diving header.

They finished with a 2-2 draw at Huddersfield then a 3-0 win over Brighton at St James’s in Keegan’s last competitive outing, with the front three fittingly all on target again.
