South Tynesiders urged to use fireworks safely after figures show rise in children's burns
Figures show a 63% increase in firework-related burn injuries to children requiring admission to specialist burns units.
South Tyneside Council is urging the public to ‘Enjoy the sparkle, but make safety the priority’ during this fireworks season.
Figures from the Children’s Burns Trust show a 63% increase in firework-related burn injuries to children requiring admission to specialist burns units between 2024 and 2025. Remember:
* Choose an organised display if possible. A large public display is the safest place to enjoy fireworks.
* Always buy fireworks from reputable, appropriately licensed retailers and check that fireworks carry the required CE or UKCA marking.

* Store them safely. This is the law.
* Never buy fireworks from an unlicensed seller. Strict rules govern their storage and sale.
* Follow the instructions. Read the safety guidance on every firework and keep everyone at the recommended distance.
* Children should always be properly supervised around fireworks. Sparklers should never be given to children under five.
* Let neighbours know if you’re planning fireworks and take steps to keep pets safe.
