6. Amazing Space, The Word, South Shields, until February 23
Amazing Space is at The Word, South Shields until February 23, 2020. The Word’s out-of-this-world exhibition marks 50 years since man first set foot on the Moon. Explore both Space fact and fiction, discover the stories inspired by Space and watch clips from classic science-fiction movies old and new. Take ‘one small step’ inside the astronaut’s spacesuit and replicate the photograph taken on the first Moon landing, or head to the Command Module and watch a short film all about life as an astronaut – the good, the bad and the occasionally unpleasant! 7. East Boldon Scarecrow Festival, South Tyneside, September 14
Following the success of last year’s inaugural event, organisers are hoping to set a new record for the number of scarecrows in East Boldon. The Scarecrow Festival, which attracted more than 100 entries when it was held for the first time in 2018, will take place again on Saturday, September 14 at Grange Park. The Friends of East Boldon Parks group, who organise the competition, are hoping to build on last year’s success and see even more of the straw figures popping up around the village. Scores of businesses, individuals and school children have been getting their entries ready for the competition. Photo: East Boldon Scarecrow Festival
