5. Cleadon Hills
A firm favourite with readers and just down the road! Head to windmill field to enjoy striking panoramic views. Photo: Stu Norton

6. Gibside
The Gibside site has 720 acres of woodland to explore and the colours generated by the trees around the hall and famous chapel (pictured) can be stunning. The National Trust hotspot also has a cafe selling warm food and drinks after a walk. Between the walled gardens, wildlife and clear air as you head south from the city centre, there's enough to take in for a few trips! Photo: Google

7. Derwent Walk
One of the longer routes on this walk by quite a way, this 11 mile trek follows the route of the old Derwent Valley Railway between Swalwell and Consett and offers a mix of woodlands, meadows and wetlands while following the River Derwent. Photo: Google

8. Walbottle and Throckley Dene
If you've ever driven along the A69, there's a good chance you've gone over Walbottle and Throckley Dene without even knowing. The path and accompanying wooded area follow the eastern side of Throckley and stretch as far down as Newburn. It also shows off the best nature has to offer at this time of year with some amazing colours on show. Photo: Google
