We’ve rounded up some great places to visit in and around Sunderland and South Tyneside if you’re looking for ways to keep the kids entertained during the holidays.
9. Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens
Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens re-opened its doors to the public on 13 July giving access to the ground floor spaces of the museum. There's temporary phased opening hours Monday to Friday 10am - 3pm. 10. Arbeia Roman Fort, South Shields
For a slice of history dating back centuries, head to Arbeia Roman Fort which will welcome back visitors on Monday, July 27 for the first time since March. Visitors to the Lawe Top site, which is managed by Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums (TWAM), can expect their experience to be a little different, with a number of new procedures in place for heightened safety. 11. Souter Lighthouse, Whitburn
Although the lighthouse is closed, the car park and tearooms are open at Souter Lighthouse and it's a great base for a walk along the clifftops. Photo: Stu Norton
12. Rainton Meadows Nature Reserve
Rainton Meadows Nature Reserve is open with social distancing measures in place. Stoat, weasel, brown hare and roe deer are regularly seen and the wetlands attract numerous dragonflies and damselflies. Butterfly numbers are also high, particularly grassland species.
