Socially distanced pantomime at South Shields' Hedworth Hall looks to bring some Christmas cheer to South Tyneside after difficult year

A special socially distanced pantomime will be coming to South Tyneside for the festive seasion – aiming to bring some Christmas cheer to the North East after a difficult year.

Hedworth Hall, in Dean Road, South Shields, will be playing host to Cinderella, with organisers saying all performers will adhere to the necessary social distancing guidelines and seating split into social bubbles.

The event will be staged by producer Kevin Reay and directed by founder of South Tyneside’s biggest community choir, Adam Allinson.

After a difficult year which has seen countless events cancelled across the region, organisers are keen to make sure this panto is able to go ahead safely and adheres to all government regulations.

Kevin said: “It has been an absolutely devastating year for theatres and we all definitely need a little Christmas cheer. I am delighted to be bringing Cinderella to The Hedworth Hall.

"We will be adhering to all of the necessary government guidelines and seating will be in social bubbles.”

Kevin said as well as the traditional story of Cinderella, audiences can expect some twists and turns from the wicked step mother and ugly step sisters.

Adam added: “With the fabulous cast we have lined up and the absolutely hilarious script written by Tom Whalley this production is going to be something really special.”

The coronavirus pandemic has wreaked havoc on theatres since March, with many calling for more government support for the industry across as venues across the country are forced to take drastic action.

South Shields arts venue The Customs House suspended all performances for September and October due to fears over rising COVID infections and confirmed job cuts at the venue are inevitable in the wake of the coronavirus lockdown.
