Looking to switch off? New study reveals the best digital detox escapes near South Tyneside
Whether you're planning a peaceful day out or a weekend away, people living in South Tyneside have some of the UK's best digital detox destinations right on their doorstep.

New research from travel specialists Arctic Direct has recognised four North East beauty spots in its UK Digital Detox Index, highlighting the region as one of Britain's best places to escape emails, notifications and the pressures of modern life.
The study analysed 66 scenic destinations across the UK, ranking them using factors including mobile phone coverage, visitor numbers, light pollution, elevation and hiking opportunities.
Northumberland leads the North East
The highest-ranked destination in the region was Northumberland National Park, which placed 15th in the nationwide rankings.
Famous for its rolling countryside, remote walking routes and internationally recognised Dark Sky Park, the national park offers an ideal retreat for anyone looking to swap screens for fresh air.
Elsewhere, Kielder Forest ranked 37th, while the North Pennines National Landscape finished 54th and the Northumberland Coast National Landscape came 63rd.
The North East's digital detox destinations
The region's destinations featured in the UK Digital Detox Index were:
Northumberland National Park (15th place)
Kielder Forest (37th place)
North Pennines National Landscape (54th place)
Northumberland Coast National Landscape (63rd place)
For South Tyneside residents, these destinations are all within reach for a day trip or weekend escape, offering everything from peaceful forests and dramatic moorland to spectacular coastal scenery.
Why the North East is ideal for switching off
The Digital Detox Index rewarded destinations that make it easier to disconnect from technology and spend more time outdoors.
Locations with fewer visitors, darker night skies, more remote landscapes and excellent walking opportunities consistently achieved the highest scores.
While South Shields is well known for its own coastline and beaches, those looking for a complete break from busy everyday life don't have to travel far to find some of England's most tranquil landscapes.
Arctic Direct: Great escapes are closer than you think
Commenting on the findings, Charlotte Marshall from Arctic Direct said:
"Many people are looking for simple ways to spend less time on their phones and more time enjoying the outdoors.
The North East has a fantastic variety of landscapes, from the peaceful surroundings of Northumberland National Park to the vast forests of Kielder and the open scenery of the North Pennines.
You don't have to travel to the Arctic to experience the benefits of switching off. Some of the UK's most restorative places are right here on the region's doorstep."
How the rankings were calculated
To create the Digital Detox Index, Arctic Direct analysed 66 destinations across the UK, including national parks, National Landscapes, forests, islands and remote scenic locations.
Each destination received a weighted score based on:
Average mobile coverage across the UK's four major networks
Annual visitors per square kilometre
Night sky darkness (light pollution)
Highest elevation
Average elevation
Number of hiking trails
The weighted scores were combined to identify the destinations offering the strongest balance of tranquillity, natural beauty and opportunities to disconnect from technology.
